30 Days for an enhanced life(or your money back)

I recently blogged about a great TED talk by Shawn Anchor titled “The happy secret to better work” which is a pretty misleading title as it should be title ‘The happy secret to a better life”.   His point throughout the talk is that positive, rather than negative, re-enforcement is what leads to the greatest changes in a persons performance and well-being.  This of course is contrary to how we work, how we are taught to motivate ourselves(I’m looking at you Tony Robbins)and how we raise our children.  There are numerous stats in his talk about how nearly all aspects of a person’s life improve when they are focused on the positive rather than the negative.  Near the end of the talk there is a slide titled ‘small changed ripple outward‘ containing 5 daily activities credited with creating lasting positive change.  Shawn talks about experiments done where a group of people reliable practice these 5 habits every day for 30 days, all the while recording the changes in their sense of well-being and their lives.

The 5 steps are things that have been said time and time again over the past couple thousand years by a couple thuosand Buddhist’s teachings but what we are seeing for the first time is the western world taking these teachings and rewording them in a way that our western culture can easily and trustingly digest.   Meaning we are starting to put peer-reviewed studies being them where the results can be independently corroborated.   The talk made me acutely aware that it’s been far too long since I’ve concentrated on inner growth by employing techniques like this so I figured that I’d take up Shawn’s challenged to go ahead with this for 30 days, record my results – for science.  Now in response to Derek Sivers TED about ‘Keep your Goals to Yourself‘ I’m not going to publish this until after the test has been done.

I’ll write up an article a day over the next 5 days going over the what and why’s of each of the habits and then talking a little bit about the scientific study mentioned in Anchor’s talk them so stay tuned!

Life will always be throwing you curveballs

I found this image today after chatting with a colleague of mine about life and it made me wax metaphorically

The bottom line is that life will always be throwing you curveballs, the secret is realizing that they are no harder to hit out of the park than anything else.  In fact, according to the stats, curveballs result in more home runs than fastballs do in a lot of situations.

I myself was just about to tell my co-worker the age-old, over used, saying that ‘life throws you curveballs and you just have to deal with them’ but the fact of the matter is that you don’t have to ‘deal with them’ because a curveball is just as good of an opportunity for a homerun as anything else and in fact in a lot of cases it’s a better opportunity!  So don’t just ‘deal’ with the next curveball that comes your way, step up to the fucking plate and start swinging!

The true pirates of the internet

Ah, I just found a beautiful quote from a commenter(dubldeka) of the youtube video at the bottom of this post:

The pirates are the nameless rouges that sail the internet in their ships called Sopa, Pipa, and Acta.
They scour the net for victims.

These pirate vessels attack all they come across regardless of nationality and demand ransom for any culture they may find in your possession.

They bring misery to many and profit only for themselves.
They are enemies of culture and a danger to civilisation.

A world run by women vs a World run by Men

I just saw a heart warming video from the Ellen Show today and it really demonstrated the difference today between televised ‘reality’ entertainment that is aimed and sells well with a female demographic and the top televised ‘reality’ entertainment that is aimed and sells very well with the a male demographic.  I’ve always been a strong advocate of men stepping down from their bristled thrones and letting women clean up the mess caused by the male primates of power of the past few millenia.

Here’s the clip from The Ellen show and let’s be clear here, this woman would not be as hugely succesful as she is right now unless what she on her show, things like this, resonated HUGELY with her audience.  At the end of the day it’s a business and if her gigantic audience didn’t didn’t want to see her doing things like this she wouldn’t be anywhere near as successful as she was doing them day to day.

Now let’s look at the other side with the men.  What do you think the most popular thing on television is for men is?  It’s this:

YouTube Preview Image and to make sure we are 100% fair because that’s a PPV event, on Cable the most popular thing for men to watch by a BIG margin is this:

On on side we have generous caring people who are literally getting on seeing one person altruistically help another person in their time of need.  In the other camp we have people experiencing elation at the sight of senseless violence between giant brutish men wearing bikini bottoms.  This certainly isn’t a blanket statement covering all men or all women but clearly shows us something about the averages and based on these averages who the hell would you rather have running your world because I’m pretty god damn sick of the spectacle that’s been going on up until now and it’s about bloody time for some change for the better.

Two great ted talks leading to a life well lived

I was lucky enough to watch these two ted talks back to back today.  One is by a brilliantly funny man that spits some essential truth actually living a life.  In the end he touches on, and backs up with scientific study, some key points on hapiness that have been espoused by many a long-winded Buddhists in the past.  Mainly:

  • Record 3 Gratitudes a day
  • Journal on positive event from the past 24 hours every day
  • Exercise daily
  • Meditate Daily
  • Commit a random act of Kindness every day.

I would say probably the quickest way to change your life is to try this for but a month and see what happens.

The second talk, while not as entertaining is by one of the greatest minds of the last 100 year Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and is on: Creativity, fulfillment and flow.  This man pioneered the idea of the ‘flow’ state and what he goes on to describe would be, in my mind what you would achieve by following the words of wisdom from the first TED talk above

Ricky Gervais on Atheism

I found two videos today about Ricky Gervais talking about atheism and I have to say this might be the first time I’ve seen this guy being serious, at least in the second video.  It’s certainly no surprise why we are seeing the conservative minded people in our world getting more and more aggressive and outspoken.  It must be a terrifying place when godless good men are showing up with alarming frequency on their televisions holding no qualms in denouncing what their entire existence is based around.

Japan hit HARD by Earthquake and Tsunami – Unreal Videos

Today on March the 11th 2011 Japan was rocked by a powerful Earthquake that was measured at 8.9 on the richter scale and then devastated by the ensuing Tsunami.  This quake measures almost 100 times more powerful than the quake that hit Haiti last year. The awesome force of nature has rarely been so clearly demonstrated as in some of the videos below.  The flooding wave, as high as 3 meters, appears completely unstoppable as it picks up houses, trucks, cars and anything in it’s path.

What can you do to help?(care of The Times)

The Red Cross: The Japanese Red Cross has already deployed 11 national disaster response teams to respond to the

crisis but you can support their efforts by donating money. Similar to their efforts to help Haiti after the earthquake in 2010, Red Cross is accepting donations either online or via text message. Simply text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 from your phone (you’ll be prompted to confirm with a second text reading YES).

Shelterbox: The UK-based organization has 18 international affiliates and it has launched an online fundraiser for the earthquake and tsunami relief efforts. Shelterbox provides assistance to afflicted countries by delivering large utility boxes that contain a shelter and other emergency relief tools. To donate online, simply go to your country’s site and click DONATE.

International Medical Corps: To donate to this global non-profit’s Emergency Response Efforts fund, simply go to their site and select the amount you wish to donate (be sure to note if you want your donation to be a “recurring gift” for future relief efforts) and fill in your information.

GlobalGiving.org: Working with other organizations such as the International Medical Corps, D.C.-based organization GlobalGiving has launched the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund, which will give aid to on the ground organizations providing emergency services. They are accepting donations online with a funding goal of $90, 000.

Convoy of Hope: This non-profit focuses on disaster relief efforts and you can donate either online at their site or via text message by texting TSUNAMI to 50555 (you’ll also be prompted to confirm with a follow up text of YES).

The Rebellion and Attrocities in Libya to date

Gadhafi's military equipment falling into the hands of the freedom fighters

Libyan freedom fights in their struggle to rid themselves of Muammar Gaddafi, the dictator who’s ruled their lives for more than 40 years, have published a declaration for a temporary council in the Republic of Libya.   Mustafa Abdul Jaleel and Abdul Hafid Abdul Qader Ghoga are named as president; and, deputy president and official spokesman, respectively.   The people have risen up and we are actually seeing what looks like the beginning of a new country.  My mind is drawn to the idea of a supernova, a violent and sudden burst of activity and then new worlds are born.  It will be something to watch to see what kind of people and what kind of country emerges from this.  Poetic words aside there is immense human suffering and death happening on the other side of the world with some estimates putting the death toll around 1000. The question that we can ask ourselves in our safety and comfort is ‘What are we doing about it?”.

I am also struck with the timing of all of these middle-eastern rebellions in such close proximity of the wiki-leaks release.  Certainly I’m not saying that they are directly linked but some of the most important events in the middle east in modern day just happen to begin mere months after the last wikileaks release.  Julian Assange saw the injustices in the world at the hands of men like Libya’s dictator and he did something about and it’s worth re-iterating the question to the rest of the world asking what are we doing about it?

The document declaring an “Establishment of the National Transitional Temporary Council” has been translated by Alive.in and can be read at the bottom of this article:

Below are some videos care of Al Jazeera that also cover the conflict

Article 3

Seat of the Council

Article 4

It is the responsibility of the Council to set protocols for its regular and emergency meetings and to make decisions in accordance with the interests of the Libyan people, in a manner that does not contradict the people’s demands, the basis of which were declared by the uprising of February 17th:  the fall of the Gaddafi regime and the establishment of a civil, constitutional and democratic state.

Article 5

Based on agreement of municipal councils across various liberated areas, the Council selects Mr. Mustafa Abdul Jaleel as the President of the National Transitional Temporary Council and Mr. Abdul Hafid Abdul Qader Ghoga as his Deputy and the Official Spokesperson for the Council.
