My 37 Day Life Experiment: 10% Devotion

10% Devotion, Inspiring — By on September 6, 2010 5:54 pm

de·vo·tion

/dɪˈvoʊʃən/ [dih-voh-shuhn] –noun

1.

profound dedication; consecration.
The idea for this experiment came out of a number of things, one of them being an article I am currently writing on Balance.  Something which we all apparently need in abundance and yet ironically something which the greatest and most successful people on this planet have very little of.   This is something that I have put thought and action into over the past while, a gradual process of purifying my life, so to speak, stripping away the activities, habits, thoughts, people and patterns which weren’t driving me towards greatness.   Clearly it isn’t a simple process, clearly I am not ‘there’ yet, but it’s progressed enough or me to arrive at this point right now where I could take the plunge into this little experiment which I am dubbing ’10% devotion’
I’m not professing that this is something everyone should do.  All of our lives are different and what may be effective for one person just won’t fit for another, that’s a given, but my life and my situation are such that such an experiment might produce some exciting results.
What I am going to do is dedicate 10% of this year(37 days) to be completely devoted to my passions in life, eliminating all distractions and all activities that don’t fall under this umbrella.  Obviously the purview of what my passions are needs to be specific and narrow enough for this to be effective.  Areas in my life that will have profound and positive effects on my life as well as the world around me:
  1. Game Design
  2. Blogging, Vlogging, and Podcasting
  3. Mental & Spiritual fitness
  4. Physical fitness
  5. Online Advertising / SEO business #1
  6. Webhosting Business
  7. Online Advertising / SEO business #2
  8. Guitar
  9. Loved ones
  10. Volleyball
That’s it, these are all areas of my life that I take very seriously and push myself towards greatness in.  So what I am going to do is devote the next 37 days, or 10% of my year to this list and absolutely nothing but.  There will be no facebook(outside of emails), no msn, no icq, no Gtalk, no twitter outside of outgoing promotional work, no online videos(except for TED), no video games, no casual socializing, no casual hobbies, no movies, no Battlestar, and no girls.
What I want to see is how each of these area’s of passion improve in my life and how my overall attitude changes.  Will I get burnt out without distractions and downtime or will a life that is focused solely on that which matters most take on a new depth of meaning?
